The Phoenix House Method
 |
The Phoenix House method has evolved over nearly 40 years and has been evaluated by clinical researchers at some of the nation's finest research institutions. Effective treatment of addiction is not something administered to passive clients by clinical professionals. Effective treatment requires active participation on the part of the client. It is a highly demanding and accountable process.
Charting a Course
Our program begins with a thorough client assessment that determines the needs, strengths and goals of each individual. From this information the client, counselor and other members of the clinical team develop a treatment plan—an individualized blueprint for positive living.

Helping One Another
Residents of Phoenix House live and work together in a tightly-knit, highly structured environment, where each member is responsible for the well-being of all the others. The daily life of the community is supervised by clinical professionals, who monitor the progress of each resident and oversee the dynamics of the treatment community.
Working for Success
Residents are expected to participate fully in the life of the community, and work is an integral part of treatment. From day one, they are given job assignments. Every resident must start at the bottom of the ladder and earn each step up in the social structure of the community, gaining increasing levels of responsibility, authority and trust over time. Residents are rewarded for their successes, and held responsible for their failures, just as they are in the real world.
Staying the Course
Long-term residential treatment is at the heart of the Phoenix House method. Research repeatedly demonstrates that longer stays in treatment produce better results. The duration of treatment varies according to the needs of each client, but ideally, residents are expected to remain in treatment for at least six months. Completion of the full treatment regimen, including aftercare, can take up to six months more.
